Turns out 10 seasons of Friends doesn’t come cheap.

Online streaming giant Netflix has announced a price-hike for customers in its native United States.

Netflix’s cheapest basic plan will cost $9, up from $8; its most popular HD standard plan will cost $13, up from $11; and its 4K premium plan will cost $16, up from $14.

It’s the largest price increase for domestic Netflix customers since the platform was first launched 12 years ago.

Over the last several years, original content has become a bigger part of what Netflix has to offer — including major success stories such as House of Cards, Making A Murderer, Haunting of Hill House, Black Mirror and Bojack Horseman. Several Netflix Original movies such as Annihilation, and the award-winning Roma, also made serious waves throughout 2018.

But these things come at a price, and right now it’s the Americans who are footing the bill. Prices across Europe, including Ireland and the United Kingdom, are set to remain the same for now.

So far, it looks like the price increase is only going to help Netflix as a business — the company’s stock has risen by 6% since this morning’s announcement.
