Netflix will be turning one of the best ever cartoons into a live-action series

Avatar: Last Airbender

This could be properly epic.

Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender will be excited this evening as Netflix has announced that they’ll be producing a live-action “reimagining” of the beloved Nickelodeon cartoon.

The original series follows the protagonist, twelve-year-old Aang and his friends, who must bring peace and unity to the world by ending the Fire Lord’s war with three nations.

Original creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko are signed on to executive produce and run the series, with production to start in 2019.

A big screen adaptation of the series came to cinemas back in 2010 but it was largely panned — so fans of the original will be hoping that Netflix can come up with goods.

In a statement, Konietzko sounded very enthusiastic about the project, saying: “We’re thrilled for the opportunity to helm this live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. We can’t wait to realise Aang’s world as cinematically as we always imagined it to be, and with a culturally appropriate, non-whitewashed cast.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to build upon everyone’s great work on the original animated series and go even deeper into the characters, story, action, and world-building.”
