This story is a bit of a long one. "That's what she said!"
The American remake of The Office, which is better than Ricky Gervais' UK original (don't @ me), is being lined up for a new series for the 2018/19 season on NBC.
The network's president Bob Greenblatt recently told reporters that the show was on his wish-list of comebacks, alongside 30 Rock, following the recent critical and commercial success of the Will & Grace revival, including receiving Golden Globe nominations for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical (for Eric McCormack) and Best Musical or Comedy TV Series.
Greenblatt stated: "We often talk about The Office. I’ve talked to Greg [Daniels, producer and writer of The Office US] four times over the past few years. It’s always, ‘Maybe someday, but not now’. There is certainly an open invitation, but we don’t have anything happening right now. If he wants to do it, I would do it."
However, as reported by TV Line, sources have confirmed that a revival of The Office is now in full swing.
The cast will be a mix of old and new, and it looks fairly unlikely that Steve Carrell, who played the boss of the Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton, PA. branch for seven of the show's nine seasons to date, will return. Additionally, John Krasinski is currently working with Amazon Studios for their new Jack Ryan series, so he too seems an unlikely returning cast member.
NBC had intended on Rainn Wilson's character Dwight Schrute to get his own spin-off show, following the "backdoor pilot" episode 'The Farm', which took place in The Office's ninth season, but following the bad reviews that the episode received, NBC decided not to pick the show up.
However, considering that Dwight actually owns the Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch building, don't be surprised to see him back in the mix pretty heavily.
