Vinyan, a 2008 horror thriller drama that has earned comparisons to the classics Apocalypse Now and Don't Look Now, is getting a rare TV screening tonight (Saturday, 30 May).
With its title meaning "ghost" or "lost spirit" in Thai, the film centres around the married couple Paul (Rufus Sewell) and Jeanne (Emmanuelle Béart). They have their lives turned upside down when, in Thailand, they lose their son, Joshua, during a tsunami.
Although their boy is presumed dead, Jeanne believes Joshua may still be out there, since his body was never recovered.
Six months later, the pair see footage of orphans living in the Thai-Myanmar jungles, and Jeanne becomes convinced that a vague figure in the background of the video is Joshua.
Though Paul is not convinced, the couple travel into the jungle to search for their son.
Directed by the acclaimed Belgian director Fabrice Du Welz (Calvaire, Message to the King, Maldoror), Vinyan is a movie we've always wanted to see, but it hasn't been available to rent or stream until now.
The film's "arty, grim" tone seemed to split critics right down the middle upon release.
That said, Sky Cinema and many other commentators have compared it to Don't Look Now, due to its haunting portrait of parental grief, and Apocalypse Now, on account of its odyssey into the jungle.
Vinyan is airing on TV tonight/tomorrow morning on Film4 at 1.15am. If that is too late for you, it will also be available to stream on Channel 4's website after.
