Star of This City Is Ours, Hannah Onslow, has revealed that the Liverpool crime drama's new chapter will catch viewers off guard.
The season 2 of the show lands on BBC One this weekend (25 October).
The new season starts with Diana Williams and her partner, Michael Kavanagh, living in Spain.
The pair is then dragged back into organised crime by a new arrival named Felipe, who is played by Alvaro Morte, known for his role of 'The Professor' in Money Heist (La casa de papel).
Speaking to Digital Spy, Onslow, who plays Diana, said that the new season is built entirely around consequences.
"The consequences of people's decisions... it's your choices that ultimately define you," she said.
Newcomer to the show Alvaro Morte joins as Felipe, the man who pulls Diana and Michael back into crime.
The new scripts are written by series creator and lead writer, Stephen Butchard.
According to Onslow, the cast could not predict where the story would go.
Fans of another crime drama already renewed for a second season will recognise the appetite for this kind of cast shake-up.
As Onslow warned viewers they could face a shock while watching, she said the cast was just as surprised while filming.
This City Is Ours season 2 begins on BBC One this weekend.
Hannah Onslow returns as Diana Williams alongside James Nelson-Joyce as Michael Kavanagh, joined by new cast member Alvaro Morte as Felipe.

Meanwhile, the BBC has confirmed that the award-winning hit drama created and written by Stephen Butchard and produced by Left Bank Pictures, has been commissioned for a third series.
The confirmation came ahead of series two launching on BBC iPlayer and BBC One on Sunday.
The BBC revealed that filming on the third series will take place next year, primarily in Liverpool.
"I don't think viewers will expect what's coming, none of us really knew where the scripts were going," she said.
"We had all these predictions, but none of them were right!"
She added that playing Diana's new arc was "really exciting" as an actress, while praising Butchard's writing as "incredible".
And if you're excited for the new episodes, in the meantime you might as well try a crime thriller worth catching on streaming.
