Axel Foley is back.

We’re not going to fall for the banana in the tailpipe, but we will believe the news that everyone’s favourite street-smart detective will be returning for another instalment.

Oh yes, Eddie Murphy has announced that he plans on bringing back Axel Foley for Beverly Hills Cop 4.

Then again, Axel could actually be Johnny Wishbone, a psychic from the island of St. Croix. Who knows?

With Coming to America 2 arriving in cinemas on 18 December, Murphy looks set to revive another one of his most famous characters and it’s not exactly a surprise.

A few years ago, Beverly Hills Cop 4 was heavily rumoured with Murphy being tipped to produce.

In 2006, producer Jerry Bruckheimer tried to get the film off the ground, but it was stuck in development hell.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura then acquired the rights and Brett Ratner was later hired to direct. However, that version never got off the ground either.

In 2011, a TV spin-off was in the works but guess what? Yep, never happened.

In an interview with Collider, Murphy gave a more optimistic update: “Yeah that’s what we’re doing after Coming to America 2,” he said.

“We’re doing Beverly Hills Cop and then the plan is to get back on stage and do stand-up. That’s what I’ll be doing mostly is standup. These movies and Saturday Night Live it’s kind of like… I’m looking at it as a bookend. If I decided I wanted to stay on the couch forever, I ended it on a funny note.”

With Murphy receiving excellent reviews for his performance in Dolemite Is My Name, it appears that his clout and status might just be enough to get Beverly Hills Cop out of the aforementioned production development hell.

Fun bit of trivia, the original Beverly Hills Cop was supposed to star Sylvester Stallone.

Could you imagine that version?

Anyway, if and when the fourth film does happen, all we’re asking is that they bring back this theme song.
