One of 2021’s best reviewed horror movies is now available to stream at home

Just in time for Halloween! Talk about spookily good timing…

Chances are that over Halloween, we will all be watching at least one scary movie.

Either new release scary movies in the cinema (reviewed here) or some classics of the genre (listed here).

Well you can now add another option to those lists, as The Night House was only released in Irish cinemas in late August this year, but this weekend is available to stream at home.

It tells the story of Beth (Rebecca Hall, giving an incredible performance), who is still reeling for the death of her husband. As she lives alone in the lakeside house that he built for them, she begins to have some disturbing visions of a ghostly presence. Thinking it might be her husband calling from beyond the grave, she starts to investigate his death and discovers some unsettling secrets…

With a score of 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, in a genre that is usually very divisive, it is clear that critics loved it:

Rolling Stone – “Screenwriters Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski lay the foundations for a conventionally well-built haunted-house chiller. But Bruckner (a V/H/S anthology alumnus who also gave us 2017’s tight little wilderness horror The Ritual) and Hall herself occasionally deviate from the plan, forming something a little more strange and sculptural.”

The Globe and The Mail – “It’s elegantly filmed and well constructed, building to a haunting climatic sequence that could sear your eyeballs.”

The Austin Chronicle – “That energy placed into making the audience look and listen out to the edges of the film makes Beth’s central placement even more vital and enthralling; and by moving to The Night House, Hall is finally given the space that every previous performance has shown she deserves.”

Screen Rant – “Uplifted by an incredible central performance by Hall, The Night House twists and turns, weaving terrifying visuals and jump-scares with thought-provoking and emotional story beats. The result makes for one of the best horror-thrillers of the year.”

The Night House is available to stream on Disney+ right now:
