Movies & TV

13th Jul 2021

One of the best action films of the last five years is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

It features one of Hollywood’s best action stars in the lead role.

Stuck for something to watch this Tuesday evening? Not to worry as JOE has compiled a list of the best movies airing on TV tonight.

Below are our picks for this evening.

Atomic Blonde – E4 – 9pm

In our pick for tonight, an undercover MI6 agent (Charlize Theron) is sent to Berlin during the Cold War to investigate the murder of a fellow agent and recover a missing list of double agents.

While the plot of Atomic Blonde ends up being a bit of a mess, who needs plot when you have a cool historical setting, an awesome 80’s soundtrack and James McAvoy providing great support as a sleazy fellow agent.

Stay tuned, specifically, for the movie’s bone-crunching seven-minute stairway fight, captured in what appears to be an unbroken shot.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children – Film Four – 9pm

When an outcast teen (Asa Butterfield) discovers clues to a mystery that stretches across time, he finds Miss Peregrine (Eva Green), a mysterious woman running a home for kids with strange abilities.

Directed by Tim Burton, it feels like his gothic take on an X-Men story.

Van Helsing – ITV 4 – 10pm

Famed monster hunter Van Helsing (Hugh Jackman) is sent to Transylvania to stop Count Dracula, who is using Dr. Frankenstein’s research and a werewolf for nefarious purposes.

While not well received upon its release in 2004, Van Helsing has gone on to be a bit of a cult favourite in some quarters.

The Other Guys – Comedy Central – 10pm

Two mismatched New York City detectives (Mark Wahlberg, Will Ferrell) seize an opportunity to step up like the city’s top cops, whom they idolise, only things don’t quite go as planned.

My personal favourite Will Ferrell starring comedy, The Other Guys boasts a screenplay filled with ace one-liners and a couple of great cameos.

An American Werewolf in London – True Movies – 10.45pm

This horror-comedy centres on two American college students on a walking tour of Britain who are attacked by a werewolf that none of the locals will admit exists.

Generally considered the best werewolf movie ever made, An American Werewolf in London is worth watching just for the incredible transformation effects by special make-up effects artist Rick Baker.

Beast – Film Four – 11.25pm

A troubled woman living in an isolated community finds herself pulled between the control of her oppressive family and the allure of a secretive outsider suspected of a series of brutal murders.

Starring Ireland’s own Jessie Buckley, Beast was a hit with critics – earning a whopping 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
