One of the best crime dramas of the last five years is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

The movie is directed by and stars a Hollywood legend.

Stuck for something to watch this Wednesday evening? Not to worry as JOE has compiled a list of the best movies airing on TV tonight.

Below are our picks for this evening.

Quantum of Solace – ITV 4 – 9pm

James Bond tries to stop a mysterious organisation from eliminating a country’s most valuable resource.

The second of the Bonds to star Daniel Craig, Quantum of Solace doesn’t live up to its predecessor Casino Royale on account of its undercooked plot and characters. That said, it’s still very watchable.

Paranormal Activity – Horror Channel – 9pm

After moving into a suburban home, a couple becomes increasingly disturbed by a nightly demonic presence.

Shot for $15,000, this found-footage horror went on to gross a whopping $193 million and spawned five sequels.

The Mule – RTÉ One – 9.35pm

Our pick for the night centres on a 90-year-old horticulturist and Korean War veteran (director Clint Eastwood) who becomes a drug mule for a Mexican cartel and thus captures the attention of a DEA Agent (Bradley Cooper).

Loosely based on an insane true story, The Mule is a well-told crime yarn that is elevated by the presence of Eastwood in front of the camera for the first time in years. In his late 80s at the time the movie was made, Eastwood looks more fragile and vulnerable than ever before onscreen – giving the film an added poignancy.

That said, it isn’t long before you see glimmers of his previous badass characters in his eyes like Dirty Harry and The Man with No Name.

Space Cowboys – ITV 4 – 11.10pm

Speaking of Eastwood, he also directs and stars, alongside Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland and James Garner, in this adventure drama about four older ex-test pilots who are sent into space to repair an old Soviet satellite.

The Handmaiden – Film Four – 11.10pm

A woman is hired as a handmaiden to a Japanese heiress, but secretly she is involved in a plot to defraud her.

From Park Chan-wook, the director of classics like Oldboy and Lady Vengeance, this darkly fun, sexy and ill-disciplined South Korean period thriller is well worth a look.

Copycat – Turner Classic Movies – 11.15pm

An agoraphobic psychologist (Sigourney Weaver) and a female detective (Holly Hunter) must work together to take down a serial killer who copies serial killers from the past.

This psychological thriller earned very good reviews upon its release in 1995.
