One of the best thrillers of the decade is among the movies on TV tonight

Rory Cashin

If you’re not in the mood for a thriller, one of the best comedies of the decade is ALSO on the telly this evening…

Happy Sunday! We’re only halfway through this Bank Holiday Weekend, so let us make the most of it with some movies!

The Bone Collector – FilmFour – 9pm

Denzel Washington is the detective who, after an accident on the job, becomes a quadriplegic, and turns to an up-and-coming street cop (Angelina Jolie) to be his eyes and ears on the vicious crime scenes when a serial killer begins stalking the city streets. Tries very hard to be the next Se7en, but winds up closer to Copycat. Which isn’t the worst thing in the world, to be honest.

Austin Powers in Goldmember – Comedy Central – 9pm

The third (and, so far, final) outing for the International Man of Mystery has him travelling back to the 1970s, teaming up with Foxxy Cleopatra (Beyonce, before she became way too famous to do anything like this) to fight against both Goldmember (Mike Myers) and Dr. Evil (also Mike Myers), in an attempt to save Powers’ dad, playing brilliantly by Michael Caine.

The Wedding Planner – RTE Two – 9pm

Jennifer Lopez is the city’s best wedding planner, but – GASP! – she can’t seem to find love for herself. She crosses paths with a handsome stranger (Matthew McConaughey) and sparks fly, only to discover that – DOUBLE GASP! – he is the groom in her next assignment!

Split – E4 – 10pm

Our pick for the night is one of M. Night Shyamalan’s best movies. Three teenage girls (one of whom is played by the fantastic Anya Taylor Joy) are kidnapped by a man (James McAvoy) suffering from multiple personality disorder. The more time they spend with him, they discover that his personalities are awaiting the arrival of “The Beast”, and the girls are to be a sacrifice for him. A very good, very tense, very well acted thriller.

Zombieland – Comedy Central – 10.50pm

An impressive cast (Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin, and THAT brilliant cameo) feature in this horror-comedy set in a zombie apocalypse. While it is usually every person for themselves, these four sorta-strangers find their paths align, so they decide to travel across America together.

Eighth Grade – BBC Two – 11.15pm

One of the most-loved comedy-dramas of the decade, written and directed by the Internet’s boyfriend Bo Burnham. The movie is an achingly real portrayal of an introverted teenage girl (Elsie Fisher), who is trying to survive the last week of her disastrous eighth grade year before leaving to start high school.

Interview with the Vampire – BBC One – 12.05am

Before he made Michael Collins, director Neil Jordan adapted this romantic vampire thriller, with Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise at the centre of an immensely homoerotic pairing, detailing the story of two vampires’ lives of many, many centuries.
