One of the best Westerns of the last ten years is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

It’s the movie that finally won Leo DiCaprio an Oscar.

Stuck for something to watch this Saturday evening? Not to worry as JOE has compiled a list of the best movies airing on TV tonight.

Below are our picks for this evening.

Dunkirk – BBC One – 9pm

This war film from Christopher Nolan depicts the Dunkirk evacuation of WWII through the perspectives of the land, sea and air.

By recounting the events of Dunkirk as essentially a tense-as-hell survival thriller and through its inventive narrative structure, Dunkirk truly is a war movie like no other. Also, the entire ensemble cast – including our own Barry Keoghan and Cillian Murphy – is perfect.

Edge of Tomorrow – Sky One – 9pm

When an alien race hits Earth with an unrelenting assault, an officer (Tom Cruise) who has never seen a day of combat is dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, he finds himself thrown into a time loop, which forces him to live out the same brutal fight over and over.

Featuring its leading man as you have never seen him before, a wonderful co-lead turn from Emily Blunt, a smart premise and tons of humour, Edge of Tomorrow is basically Hollywood blockbusters at their best.

Catch Me If You Can – Film Four – 9pm

Based on a true story, this crime movie centres on a man (Leonardo DiCaprio) who, before his 19th birthday, successfully conned millions of dollars worth of checks as a Pan Am pilot, doctor, and legal prosecutor. Attracting the attention of the FBI, an agent (Tom Hanks) makes it his mission to put him behind bars.

The first of two DiCaprio movies on this list, Catch Me If You Can is one of its director Steven Spielberg’s best movies, which is some feat given the filmmaker’s acclaimed, lengthy career. It manages to feel fun, light and speedy, while also emotional and melancholic.

Capote – TG4 – 9.20pm

In 1959, Truman Capote (Philip Seymour Hoffman) learns of the murder of a Kansas family and decides to write a book about the case. While researching, he forms a relationship with one of the killers (Clifton Collins Jr) who is on death row.

Detailing the writing of the original non-fiction novel In Cold Blood, Capote is a must for literary fans. That said, anyone can appreciate the powerful, transformative and Oscar-winning work of Hoffman in the lead role.

The Revenant – RTÉ Two – 9.40pm

In our pick for this evening, a frontiersman (Leonardo DiCaprio, again) on a fur trading expedition in the 1820s fights for survival after being mauled by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team.

Remembered mostly now as the movie that finally got Leo his Oscar, The Revenant is an excellent film in its own right. It features some of the most starkly beautiful scenery ever seen in cinema, a thrilling and terrifying bear attack sequence and incredible supporting work from Will Poulter and villain of the piece Tom Hardy.

The Equalizer – RTÉ One – 10pm

A man (Denzel Washington) who believes he has put his mysterious past behind him cannot stand idly by when he meets a young girl (Chloe Grace Moretz) under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters.

Washington is his effortlessly charismatic self in this solid reboot of the popular 1980s TV series of the same name.

Breakdown – Turner Classic Movies – 11.50pm

This nail-bitingly tense thriller stars Kurt Russell as a man who searches for his missing wife after their car breaks down in the middle of the desert.
