Our TV movie pick for tonight (Friday, 27 March) is Pale Rider, the legendary Western directed by and starring Clint Eastwood (A Fistful of Dollars, Dirty Harry).
Released in 1985, the film sees Eastwood play an enigmatic man named Preacher. He arrives in a small town where a property owner named Coy LaHood (Richard Dysart) is using a band of hooligans to terrorise a group of gold miners into giving up their territory.
"Preacher fends off the attacks, and then goes directly to LaHood to negotiate," the plot synopsis adds.
"When the miners, led by Hull Barret (Michael Moriarty), refuse the terms, LaHood sends in Marshall Stockburn (John Russell) to take down Preacher and the others."
Also featuring in its cast the likes of Billy Drago (The Untouchables) and Chris Penn (Reservoir Dogs), Pale Rider holds an impressive 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
In particular, critics singled out Eastwood's stylish direction and his mysterious, almost mythic lead character for praise.
The movie was also a box office smash and went on to become the highest-grossing Western of the 1980s.
Pale Rider is airing on TV tonight on TG4 at 9pm. The film is also available to rent on Apple TV, Google Play, Prime Video, Rakuten TV and the Sky Store.
Rocky - ITV4 - 8.50pm
In this Oscar Best Picture winner, a small-time Philadelphia boxer (Sylvester Stallone, who also wrote the sports drama) gets a supremely rare chance to fight the world heavyweight champion.
John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum - E4 - 9pm
Probably the weakest of the four main John Wick films, yet still pretty incredible.
65 - Film4 - 9pm
An alien (Adam Driver) fights dinosaurs in this action survival flick that one wishes were better.
Contraband - Legend - 9pm
Mark Wahlberg headlines this solid crime thriller, playing a former smuggler and family man coerced back into the criminal life for one last job.
Drive Angry - Legend Xtra - 9pm
This fun thriller stars Nicolas Cage as a man named John Milton, who escapes from Hell with Satan’s gun, the Godkiller, to hunt down the cult leader who murdered his daughter and kidnapped her baby.
End of Sentence - RTÉ2 - 9.30pm
In this 2019 drama with 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, an American young man (Logan Lerman, Fury) - just released from prison - reluctantly embarks on a journey with his estranged father (John Hawkes, True Detective) to spread his mother's ashes in her native Ireland.
Horizon Line - Film4 - 10.50pm
This nail-biting thriller sees Allison Williams (Get Out) and Alexander Dreymon (The Last Kingdom) play two recent exes who hop aboard the same small plane. This is to take them to their friend's wedding on a remote island near Mauritius.
When the pilot (Keith David, The Thing) suddenly drops dead from a heart attack, however, they're left without a way to fly or land safely.
Femme - BBC Two - 11pm
This incredibly tense 2023 thriller we've recommended before stars Nathan Stewart-Jarrett (Misfits) as Jules, a much-celebrated drag artist in London who, one night after a show, is the victim of a homophobic attack.
Traumatised by the assault, Jules withdraws from the outside world until a chance encounter with his attacker (George MacKay, 1917) leads him to concoct a revenge plan.
Bad Lieutenant - Legend Xtra - 11.05pm
Harvey Keitel is a very bad lieutenant in this '90s crime thriller that was once banned in Ireland but is set to get a standalone sequel very soon.
The Graduate - RTÉ One - 11.15pm
This Oscar-winning ‘60s comedy-drama sees Dustin Hoffman play a disaffected recent college graduate. Beginning an affair with Mrs Robinson (Anne Bancroft), a bored housewife and family friend, the situation is further complicated when he falls in love with her daughter (Katherine Ross).
A brilliantly sharp portrait of post-college anxieties, The Graduate also boasts an iconic Simon & Garfunkel soundtrack and one of the most famous final scenes of all time.
The Hunted - Legend - 11.15pm
A poorly reviewed ’90s action thriller with Christopher Lambert, Joan Chen and John Lone.
The Inbetweeners Movie - E4 - 11.35pm
The Inbetweeners lads get the big screen treatment.
