The film had its premiere just a few weeks after the release of Normal People.

Irish Oscar-nominee Paul Mescal’s very first film – the 2020 short Drifting – has just been added to Disney+.

15 minutes in length, the short first premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh in July of that year, just a few weeks after the release of Normal People rocketed the Maynooth man to global fame.

“Cian (Mescal) and Pat (Dafhyd Flynn, Michael Inside) have been joined at the hip since they were kids and have the run of their small town in the midlands,” the plot synopsis reads.

“Cian is content to coast through a life of booze and casual hook-ups while Pat has begun to grow weary of his surroundings.”

Well-liked on the festival circuit, Drifting was written and directed by duo Robert Higgins and Patrick McGivney, who went onto make the acclaimed Irish sports drama feature Lakelands – which was released in 2022 and currently holds a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

In a statement on its socials, Harp Media – the production company behind the 2020 short – wrote: “Delighted to announce that Drifting is now available to stream on Disney+.

“Big thank you to everyone who made it possible.”

The short’s Disney+ release comes as Mescal is currently in the news.

This is as his biggest movie yet, the Hollywood epic sequel Gladiator II, will be arriving in Irish cinemas next month on 15 November.

For those interested in checking out his earliest film work, Drifting is streaming on Disney+ in Ireland and the UK right now.
