People think that The Simpsons have once again predicted the future

Alan Loughnane

A trend that keeps going…

Chatter that the Fox series had added the closure of the toy retailer to it’s creepy predictions list began on Twitter this week, when social media users pointed out a scene from 2004 episode ‘Marge vs Singles, Seniors, Childless Couples and Teens and Gays’.

In the episode, the people of Springfield tear down a statue of Itchy and Scratchy, and then bartender Moe Szyslak goes to a Toys ‘R’ Us store and turns around the letter R, which is usually displayed backward.

Toys ‘R’ Us announced last week that they would be closing down or selling all their stores after it failed to find a buyer for its company.

However, despite the similarities and people wishing it were true, the episode didn’t actually feature the store shutting down, just the people of Springfield destroying all the child friendly things in town.

So for want of a better phrase, talk that they predicted the sale is basically fake news.
