Philip Pullman announces epic trilogy The Book of Dust, which will companion His Dark Materials

Alan Loughnane

Brilliant news for fans of the original books…

Long anticipated, Philip Pullman has announced a new trilogy set in His Dark Materials universe, 17 years after the conclusion of the last book.

On his website, Pullman explained that first two volumes feature Lyra Belacqua in two periods of her life, first as a child and then 10 years following the finish of His Dark Materials.

His new novel will be published on October 19 this year with the first part of the three book series being called, The Book of Dust.

The uber-successful His Dark Materials sold 17 million copies and even an movie adaption called The Golden Compass.

Alethiometers, daemons and the Magisterium will all return in the new books but that’s not to say there won’t be a plethora of new characters for eager book fans to discover and fall in love with.

In Pullman’s fictitious world, which he is reluctant to label fantasy, but rather “realism about a different place,” humans live with an animal companion called a daemon, which is essentially the embodiment of their soul.

Pullman said he wanted to return to Lyra’s universe to clear up the issue with ‘dust’, the mysterious substance at the centre of the original books which caused so much trouble.

“Little by little, through that story the idea of what Dust was became clearer and clearer, but I always wanted to return to it and discover more,” Pullman said.
