Pic: This Fawlty Towers rejection letter from 1974 should give hope to all aspiring comedy writers

One of the greatest comedies of them all, Fawlty Towers, was not looked upon favourably at first by some TV 'experts'.

One of the greatest comedies of them all, Fawlty Towers, was not looked upon favourably at first by some TV ‘experts’.

This story has done the rounds before, but it has re-surfaced on Twitter thanks to a re-tweet from one Piers Morgan amongst others in recent days. It’s a reminder to everyone to never give up on their dreams and to always, ALWAYS get a second opinion.

The letter itself is from Ian Main from the BBC, who is writing to the BBC head of Comedy and Light Entertainment and it outlines his utter disdain for the comedy pilot script for Fawlty Towers.

JOE is now going to dust off the old script we had written about a B&B run by a spy who works for China and is set in Leitrim in the 1950s. We’re sure it’ll be picked up this time.
