Could there be one last adventure for Captain Jack?
Pirates of the Caribbean creators say there could be potential for Johnny Depp to return in the next sequel following his high-profile trial against ex-wife Amber Heard, citing that there are multiple scripts currently in development.
Veteran producer Jerry Bruckheimer has revealed that the next film in the series is not only currently in development at Disney but even gave a hint as to possible stars who could join the franchise.
“Yes. We’re talking to Margot Robbie. We are developing two Pirates scripts – one with her, one without,” the producer said in an interview with The Sunday Times, and after being asked if Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow is a part of these new stories, he replied: “Not at this point [but] the future is yet to be decided.”
As for Depp himself, despite his relationship having soured with Disney and the entertainment giant continuing to profit off of the character and his likeness after dropping him from the franchise’s sixth instalment – the actor has previously stated his desire to give the character “a proper goodbye”.
Speaking during his testimony in April, Depp noted he ” planned on continuing until it was time to stop” but the allegations made by Heard meant that he was turned from “Cinderella into Quasimodo” in terms of his status in the industry. Depp was rumoured to be due a payment a little over €21 million for the next film in the series.
So, while Bruckheimer could not officially confirm anything beyond the fact that more Pirates films are coming, it seems plausible that both parties have an incentive for the situation to be resolved and for Captain Jack Sparrow to make another appearance – even if it is to be his last.
