Our TV movie pick for tonight (Thursday, 10 September) is Premium Rush, the 2012 thriller starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception, Looper).
The actor plays Wilee, a law school graduate in New York who has been putting off taking the bar exam. This is because he loves his current job as a New York City bicycle messenger, "dodging speeding cars, evading crazy cab drivers, and blowing by millions of cranky pedestrians".
Despite being a bit of a daredevil - his choice of bike is a lightweight Fixie with no brakes - Wilee is unprepared when his last run of the day turns into a life-or-death chase through Manhattan.
This is after Wilee (whose name is a nod to the character Wile E. Coyote from The Road Runner cartoon) is tasked with transporting a highly valuable item, one that gambling addict and crooked cop, Bobby Monday (Michael Shannon, Nocturnal Animals), is desperate to steal as a way to pay off his debts.
The first line of Premium Rush is Wilee laying out his life philosophy, explaining: "I can't work in an office. I don't like wearing suits. I like to ride. Fixed gear, steel frame, no brakes. The bike cannot coast. The pedals never stop turning. Can't stop. Don't want to either."
This also feels like a statement of intent for the movie's director, Koepp. Clocking in at a tight 92-minutes, Premium Rush is a fast-paced thriller that never takes its foot off the pedal.
On top of this, the film boasts a scene-stealing villain turn from the always excellent Michael Shannon. The actor makes his dirty cop character scary and volatile, but also a fool who the audience can laugh at.
A flashback sequence showing how Bobby Monday racked up so much debt is one for the ages.
Premium Rush is on TV tonight on Film4 at 9pm. The movie is also available to stream on Netflix now.
On top of all this, the thriller can be watched for free on Channel 4's website after it airs on tele.
