Just as we're descending further into the horror show that is the month of January, the Insidious series has led us into the darkest depths of “The Further”. An astral plane full of grey surroundings and mist... again, much like January.
It’s also occupied by the dead and has a habit of letting its occupants escape to our world and drag people back with them. Prepare to be pulled back into this nightmarish world with the latest instalment.
In Insidious: The Last Key, Demonologist Elise Reiner (Lin Shaye) who's served as our anchor throughout the series is back. She's been put through the ringer in the previous films, helping others get over their monstrous infestations. This time around she's investigating a mystery that relates to her own past. It's one thing to do this stuff freelance, but when the ghosts come to your own door, all bets are off.
Over the course of the last three films, director James Wan, who helmed the first two chapters along with his successor Leigh Wannell for the third, managed to create a genuinely original blend of scares with a dark sense of humour. Taking their cues from other horror classics like The Shining, Poltergeist and a healthy dollop of Ghostbusters for good measure.
Judging by the trailer for the latest instalment which you can check out below, new director Adam Robitel has managed to remain true to the tone of his predecessors while bringing something new to the table.
It looks like poor Elise is in for a rough time of it once again at the hands of her spectral visitors.
