A programme on RTÉ tonight is showing how previous Irish Lotto winners have spent their millions
Tonight on RTÉ One, viewers will get a unique insight into what it is like to be one of the lucky ones to take home a big win from the National Lottery in a two-part documentary.
We Won the Lotto is a two-part documentary series telling the first-hand stories of people who’ve experienced life changing lottery wins in Ireland over the past 30 years.
In 1988 The National Lottery launched its first weekly draw. Since then there’s been over 800 Jackpot wins of one million or more. Less than 10% of these millionaire winners go public – and of that 10%, most of them elect not to give interviews.
Each episode interweaves four contrasting winners' stories; featuring winners living both here and abroad. Viewers can find out what life was like for them before the win, reliving how the win happened, the shock, the aftermath and the repercussions of their windfall.
How have their lives changed? How have they changed? What did they spend the money on? Did they give up work? What do they miss about their old lives and do they believe that winning a life changing amount of money has made them happier?
In this clip, Billy Comer from Co Galway realised he had won the lottery - a £1.1 million punt win in 1994 - and how the news spread like wildfire.
He and wife Carmel also look at letters from people around the country congratulating them on the win and even going as far as asking for donations.
We Won the Lotto starts Monday, February 5th at 9.35pm on RTÉ One.
