Legendary director Terrence Malick's long-gestating epic biblical drama The Way of the Wind has just gotten a very exciting update from one of its stars, Joseph Fiennes.
JOE interviewed Fiennes about Young Sherlock, his very fun new Prime Video action-adventure series in which he plays the father of a 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes (played by Joseph's real-life nephew Hero Fiennes Tiffin).
You can read JOE's review of Young Sherlock and about our interviews with the cast and creator of the show, right here.
Towards the end of our chat with Hero and Joseph, we had to ask the latter about the status of The Way of the Wind.
For those not aware, the epic drama is from the writer-director Terrence Malick, the filmmaker behind such classics as Badlands, Days of Heaven, The Thin Red Line and The Tree of Life.
The Way of the Wind is described as a "dramatisation of several episodes in the life of Jesus Christ".
Jesus Christ will be played in the movie by Géza Röhrig (Marty Supreme, Son of Saul), while Oscar-winner Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies, The Outfit) will play Satan.
The cast is also said to include Oscar-winner Ben Kingsley, along with Franz Rogowski, John Rhys-Davies, Joseph Fiennes, Matthias Schoenaerts, as well as Irish actors Aidan Turner, Martin McCann and Sarah Greene.
Known for being exceptionally particular and uncompromising, Malick's work is notorious for delays and long post-production processes.
Indeed, The Way of the Wind reportedly finished shooting in 2019.
Since then, there has been no trailer or release date.
As such, JOE asked Fiennes if there was any update on the new Malick movie.
In response, he said:
"It will be worth the wait. He's just extraordinary, as you know.
"It's been a long process. I actually met Terry about 20-25 years ago, and I came in to do a read for him, and I didn't hear a thing.
"And then 25 years later, I got a phone call saying: 'You've got the part.'
I said: 'Terry, I think I might have changed in 25 years.'
He said: 'No,' I send the photographs to him: 'No, you're still the guy.'
"So, that will tell you that the process is a long one and it's a very meaningful one to him.
"It's been seven years, I think, in the making, and I think it's possibly a very beautiful testament of one of our greatest filmmakers."
