Mulgrew will play the lead role in the series. Her character is Nora Savage, a seasoned NYPD detective who takes a career break after a traumatic event and moves to her family home on the west coast of Ireland.
Expecting a change of pace, Nora is unexpectedly pulled into a murder investigation involving a female climate activist.
"As she goes head-to-head with a ruthless environmental magnate, putting those closest to her at risk, she is forced to confront her personal demons head-on," the plot synopsis adds.
"As the investigation builds to a tense and savage climax, it pushes Nora and the squad into a thrilling hunt for the killer."
The six-part show is from writer Eithne Verling, making her TV drama debut. The series was created specifically for Mulgrew after the pair had a chance meeting in Galway while the actress was on holiday.
Filming for The Yank took place in Connemara in Galway. The show is directed by acclaimed duo Joe Lawlor and Christine Molloy (Kin, Rose Plays Julie).
In a statement about the series earlier this year, Mulgrew said: “The Yank was borne out of my love for Ireland, and the luck and perspicacity I have enjoyed when it came to knowing who will matter to me both emotionally and creatively.
"That person is Eithne Verling, and the character we contrived is Nora Savage – a woman very like myself, had I been slashed with grief, blessed with raw courage and born a natural hunter of that which destroys.
"The Yank is the intriguing and unexpected story of a woman who has nothing to lose, and her obsessive attraction to what lies beneath.”
RTÉ has unveiled a first look at The Yank (working title), its new crime drama with Colm Meaney (Gangs of London), John Connors (Love/Hate) and Kate Mulgrew (Orange Is the New Black).

The cast also includes Cillian O'Sullivan (Daredevil: Born Again), India Mullen (These Sacred Vows) and Jack Rowan (MobLand).

Along with releasing a first image for The Yank - in which Connors and Mulgrew's characters can be seen together - RTÉ has said that the series will premiere "this autumn". This will be around the same time as its other upcoming crime drama Tall Tales & Murder (which you can read about here).
The announcement comes as the Irish broadcaster unveiled its upcoming drama slate today (Tuesday, 21 July). As part of this, RTÉ also confirmed that its shows Kin and The Walsh Sisters will be returning.
