Stephen Porzio

The movie is earning comparisons to the original Rambo.

New Netflix original action thriller movie Rebel Ridge has just landed on the streaming service and currently holds a near-perfect 98% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Written and directed by Jeremy Saulnier (the incredible thrillers Blue Ruin and Green Room), the film centres around Terry Richmond (Aaron Pierre, Foe) – who enters the the small Louisiana town of Shelby Springs on a simple but urgent mission.

This is to post bail for his cousin and save him from imminent danger.

“But when Terry’s life’s savings is unjustly seized by law-enforcement, he’s forced to go head to head with local police chief Sandy Burnne (Don Johnson, Miami Vice) and his combat-ready officers,” the plot synopsis reads.

“Terry finds an unlikely ally in court clerk Summer McBride (AnnaSophia Robb, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) and the two become ensnared in a deep-rooted conspiracy within the remote township.

“As the stakes turn deadly, Terry must call upon his mysterious background to break the department’s hold on the community, bring justice to his own family – and protect Summer in the process.”

Co-starring David Denman (The US Office), Emory Cohen (Brooklyn) and James Cromwell (Succession), Rebel Ridge was included on JOE’s list of its 24 most anticipated movies of 2024.

This was after years of delays both due to Covid and John Boyega dropping out of the project during filming – with Pierre later stepping into the lead role.

Now finally released on Netflix, Rebel Ridge appears to have been worth the wait.

Critics have been raving about the movie – with Pierre’s lead turn, the film’s action set-pieces and its socially conscious story being singled out for particular praise.

You can read a sample of some of these reviews below:

IGN Movies: “It’s what a modern crowd-pleaser should be: smart, gripping, and about something.”

IndieWire: “John Boyega was originally cast as Terry, but Pierre makes the role so thoroughly his own that it’s difficult to imagine anyone else pulling it off. He commands the screen with a handsome authority.”

Tribune News Service: “For a moment, one man on a bike with a few expertly wielded weapons can wreak holy havoc on corrupt cops, and damn does it feel good to watch.”

Rebel Ridge is streaming on Netflix right now.
