Robert Downey Jr. has signed up for another two adventures as Iron Man after it was announced today he will don the signature armoured suit again.

Marvel Studios announced that Downey has signed a deal to return as billionaire playboy philanthropist Tony Stark and his superheroic alter ego Iron Man for two more movies: the team-up film The Avengers 2, writer/director Joss Whedon’s sequel to last year’s $1.5 billion hit, as well as The Avengers 3.

And why wouldn’t he? Although financial details were not disclosed, Downey confirmed to GQ that he was paid $50 million for the first Avengers movie and can expect something similar for the next two instalments.

Marvel executive producer Kevin Feige said earlier this year that the Iron Man armour will have to be passed someday – Downey will be 50 when Avengers 2 will be released and will be his fifth and sixth times playing Iron Man on the big screen – but is too much of a draw not to be involved.

The last edition of Avengers grossed more than $1.2 billion worldwide and fans will be waiting patiently for the next flick. And waiting is exactly what they will have to do.

According to USA Today, The Avengers 2 is tentatively scheduled to begin production in March, and will open in theatres May 1, 2015.
