RTÉ to air two-part documentary about Sergeant Maurice McCabe

Carl Kinsella

A scandal that has dogged Irish society for years.

RTÉ has announced that it will air a two-part documentary on the smear campaign against Garda whistleblower Maurice McCabe on 12 & 13 November.

Presented by reporter Katie Hannon, the documentary will look into McCabe’s story, as well as the effects that the scandal have had on his life and family.

RTÉ said: “For the first time, and exclusively for RTÉ, Maurice and Lorraine McCabe will tell their personal story in a two-part documentary, Whistleblower: The Maurice McCabe Story, to be broadcast on RTÉ One across consecutive nights on 12 and 13 November”.

McCabe is the man at the centre of one of the most wide-ranging scandals that Irish politics has ever seen. A Garda sergeant, McCabe had originally sought to blow the whistle on wide-scale abuse of the penalty points system across the Gardaí.

Afterwards, he became the target of a smear campaign, which was thoroughly rebuked by the Disclosures Tribunal led by Justice Peter Charleton. McCabe was falsely accused of sexual abuse — an allegation which he has said “destroyed” his family. McCabe is now suing the state for exemplary damages.

McCabe announced today that he was retiring from An Garda Síochána.
