Less than ideal.
RTÉ’s coverage of Ireland’s opening Rugby World Cup 2019 clash with Scotland on Sunday morning faced several issues regarding the commentary.
Many on social media noted a litany of problems with RTÉ’s commentary, which was led by Hugh Cahill.
At the beginning of the sensational 27-3 win, the audio on the commentary was muffled and distant, with many complaining that they couldn’t even hear what was being said.
While the original problem was eventually corrected, the commentary was then seconds behind the play. Though this seemed to be resolved at around the 30 minute mark, similar problems arose in the second half with the commentary out of sync with the play but in the other direction.
Again, the fault was eventually corrected.
Hundreds of frustrated messages were posted to Twitter throughout the match.
RTÉ have the rights to broadcast all of Ireland’s games at the Tokyo World Cup, and will also broadcast all the knockout games.
Like the RTE commentary, Scotland fell apart early on. Unlike the RTE commentary they didn’t even remotely get it back together. #IRESCO

I take it RTE's commentary team aren't seeing same feed as rest of us – there's been lots of shots of Sexton getting treatment, yet they still remain surprised Murray is kicking

RTÉ player just stopped working at all now. ?♂️ #IREvSCO. Time for the radio commentary.

KnarkyBadger rte I’ve switched to ITV. The commentary on RTÉ started on what sounded like a phone. It was so echoey. Plus there was a time lag with the footage.

Ah RTÉ. Commentary about 10 secs behind play after sounding like it was being phoned in for the first while.
