She went down a treat…

The Carlow native is very much the talk of Hollywood right now following her Oscar-nominated turn in Ladybird, and she appeared on The Graham Norton Show last night for a chat ahead of the awards next month.

You may also remember that she was a key part of Ed Sheeran’s music video for ‘Galway Girl’, and she told the story on Norton’s couch about how the infamous “Galway Grill” tattoo came about.

“He’s huge everywhere, but he’s beloved in Ireland,” Saoirse explained, as she talked through the video for Sheeran’s ‘Galway Girl’ song in which her handwritten tattoo features.

“He got that really tattooed?” Graham asked.

“He did, yeah,” Saoirse replied. “That’s my handwriting.”

Saoirse revealed she practised for half-an-hour beforehand, but Debra Messing interrupts, asking: “And that’s what you came up with?”

She also told the story of going to see her Oscar-nominated film at a cinema in the US with her mother.

“[Her mother] was really proud and had heard it was doing really well,” Ronan said.

“So I was like ‘Mam, it’s doing really well. Let’s go see it with a real audience. It’s probably gonna be sold out, but we’ll just go and see…’ So, I got us tickets to like a 4 o’clock screening, or something like that. I was like ‘Keep your head down. There’s posters everywhere, it’s been sold out.’”

But that wasn’t too be the case she revealed.

“We go into the cinema, there’s a total of six people in there. All on their phones. Nobody was interested at all…

“But she loved it. And I think the other six people loved it too.”
