There is officially a new Scream movie in the works

Do you like scary movies? Good, because there is another on the way…

Believe it or not, it has been eight years since the last Scream movie.

Admittedly, this might feel like too long and too short a time, either because it feels like Scream is still present in our lives (there have been three seasons of the Scream TV show since then), or not present at all (because Scream 4 wasn’t very good and you probably forgot it existed).

But, as with all good things in horror, nothing dead stays dead for too long and Bloody Disgusting are reporting that a fifth Scream movie is on the way.

Wes Craven, the director of the first four Scream movies, passed away in 2015 and Kevin Williamson, writer of the majority of the franchise so far, is also reportedly not involved in the new project.

It remains unclear if the new movie will be a reboot, or a direct sequel; the only real information so far is that Spyglass Entertainment (Shutter Island, The Sixth Sense) have put the project into active development.

Long-running horror franchise reboots/sequels have had a hit-and-miss success rate lately. Obviously the new take on Halloween went fantastically well, but this year’s Child’s Play failed to get much attention.

Next year we’ll also be getting a return of Candyman and The Grudge, but we probably shouldn’t expect to see Scream 5 (or whatever they end up calling it) until closer to 2021.
