Foreign fans of Derry Girls have picked their favourite character from the wonderful show

Paul Moore

Sister Michael Derry Girls

Hard to pick a favourite but we agree.

If you’ve got to deal with the hurricane of destruction, neuroses and hormones that define our favourite Derry girls – and the wee English fella – then you’re going to need a lot of patience, or an attitude where you really don’t give a shit.

Well, when it comes to Sister Michael (Siobhan McSweeney), the Head Mistress of Our Lady Immaculate College convent school, it’s clear what type of educator she is because when she’s not delivering withering putdowns, proclaiming her hatred for the French, or dishing out some harsh truths about students participating in the talent show, she’s stealing every scene that she’s in.

As stated previously, plenty of people would love to see Sister Michael get her own spin-off show but we think she’s far too busy with judo and Rawhide to take notice of that sort of chat.

Truth be told, from the moment that she delivered the line: “I think it’s safe to say that we all lost a bit of respect for you there Clare” in the first episode, Sister Michael quickly solidified her reputation as one of – if not THE – best character in the show.

This being said, it’s those tiny moments of humanity that really make the character stand out.

Yes, she may be sardonic, cold, distant, distrustful of priests, and incredibly reluctant to help any student, but underneath it all, she does have a soft side….we think.

Ever since Derry Girls was made available on the global version of Netflix, plenty of people have absolutely fallen in love with Lisa McGee’s show and Siobhan McSweeney’s brilliant portrayal of Sister Michael is a large reason why.

How would Sister Michael react to this newfound fame?

Well, in her own famous word, she would probably tell the following people “yeah, you might want to think about wising up.”
