Ray Liotta is starring and it will also feature a younger version of Tony Soprano.
The Sopranos prequel film that’s directed by Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones, Thor: The New World) will be released on 25 September 2020, as reported by The Wrap.
As previously reported, the film was originally had the working title of ‘The Many Saints of Newark’ but that has now changed to just ‘Newark’.
As for the plot, the film is set in the 1960s during the Newark riots, five days of violence that saw members of the African-American and Italian communities clashing with local police.
26 people died and more than 700 people were injured during the riots.
 James Gandolfini’s own son, Michael, will be playing a younger version of Tony Soprano and Goodfellas star Ray Liotta has also been cast.
“The movie will deal with the tensions between the blacks and whites at the time, and Tony Soprano will be part of this, but as a kid,” said David Chase (writer) in a previous interview.
Chase also said that the film will harken back to a more “professional” era of the Mafia.
“The Mafia was very polished at that time, how they dressed and what they did. Those traditions were followed more loosely in the series. These weren’t guys who wore tracksuits, back then,” he said.
As for the rest of the cast, Alessandro Nivola, Vera Farmiga, Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Billy Magnussen, and John Magaro will all star.
