SOULM8TE, the Ireland-shot spin-off to the hit 2022 sci-fi horror M3GAN, is now available to buy or rent to watch at home.
The movie is a stand-alone entry in the M3GAN universe that has been billed as an erotic thriller with a technological twist.
"But when he attempts to program her to be a truly sentient soulmate, she develops needs of her own--unleashing a relentless spree of precision-engineered mayhem."
Co-starring Claudia Doumit (The Boys), SOULM8TE is directed by Irish filmmaker Kate Dolan (You Are Not My Mother), who also worked on the script with legendary horror maestro James Wan (The Conjuring, Saw).
The M3GAN spin-off was also partially shot in Dublin city, with filming taking place at Camden Street bar Jimmy Rabbittes last September.
While initially set for a cinema release, Soulm8te has skipped this and gone straight to Premium Video on Demand (PVOD). Dolan has said the theatrical rollout was scrapped because of the box office underperformance of M3GAN 2.0 last year.
Speaking to TheWrap, she said: "Your biggest fear is that it’s going to get shelved. You hear those stories of films just getting shelved completely. Your brain goes to that as the worst-case scenario.
“M3GAN 2.0 had a massive impact. It was considerable how quickly the trajectory changed of what we were going to do. It was kind of crazy.”
While saddened SOULM8TE won't be screened widely in cinemas, particularly after hosting some rowdy test screenings during the edit process, Dolan is happy her thriller is now on PVOD.
She told TheWrap: “A lot of movies that really got me to love filmmaking were films that I watched at home on TV or on VHS or DVD or just playing on TV late at night... There’s so many people who engage with stuff at home and on streaming.
"What I’ve found is like it’s a film best enjoyed like when you’ve had a few drinks with your friends, and you’re just like shouting at the screen and laughing."
SOULM8TE did have its world premiere last night (Friday, 31 July) at the Gaze International LGBT Film Festival in Dublin's Light House Cinema, where it seems to have been warmly received by those present.
