We haven’t heard the last of this one yet.

News emerged on Tuesday evening that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, a fan-favourite in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, could be leaving the MCU.

Reports suggested that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige would no longer produce any Spider-Man films due to an inability by Disney and Sony Pictures to come to new terms that would give Disney a 50/50 co-financing stake as projects move forward.

Heartbreaking stuff for fans of everyone’s favourite neighbourhood superhero.

Since then, fans have rallied together to try and stop this cinematic injustice, with thousands of tweets being posted and dozens of petitions being made.

Sony have also released a statement shedding some light on the situation, which read:

“Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterised recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise. We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live action Spider-Man film.

“We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him – including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own.

“Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue.”

The line “we hope this might change in the future” has filled us with a slight bit of optimism, but we’ll find out soon if this is nothing more than just false hope.

Like we said, we haven’t heard the last of this one yet.
