A Star Is Born

Get the popcorn.

In terms of directorial debuts, it’s hard to argue against the quality of Bradley Cooper’s remake of A Star Is Born, which really hit the right notes with critics and audiences alike.

Despite the fact that the Oscar voters weren’t singing from the same sheet – Cooper’s film only won one award of the eight for which it was nominated, Best Original Song for Lady Gaga – there’s an awful lot to like about the powerful drama.

In case you haven’t seen it yet, the film revolves around a burned-out musician (Cooper) that helps a young singer (Lady Gaga) find fame as age and alcoholism sends his own career into a downward spiral.

Cooper’s performance as the beaten down and troubled Jackson Maine is cleverly underplayed but the breakout star is undeniably Lady Gaga.

In her first leading role as Ally, a struggling artist, she imbues the character with a clever mix of charm, talent and strength.

Without spoiling it too much for those who haven’t seen it, the finale, which is predominantly shot via a close-up of her face, is extraordinary.

Aside from the strong performances – shout out to Sam Elliott and Dave Chappelle, who are also excellent throughout – the film boasts an incredibly catchy soundtrack.

Ok, ‘Shallow’ has been played to death, but the songs in the film are excellent throughout.

If you haven’t seen the film yet, or if you just fancy having it to watch in your own time, A Star Is Born is available to watch on Sky Cinema and NOW TV from Friday, 12 July.

Prior to the film being released, JOE’s Rory Cashin got to speak with Bradley Cooper about the critically-acclaimed film and you can see that interview below.
