STAR WARS: Ewan McGregor has some good news regarding an Obi-Wan spin-off film

Paul Moore

We would love to see this happen.

Most Star Wars fans have a very odd relationship with the most recent trilogy that featured Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi.

It’s almost like seeing an ex that you really loved, but they’ve somehow changed and are now riddled with midi-chlorians after hanging out with Jar Jar Binks.

Throughout Episodes I-III, it’s hard to see through the layers of CGI, poor writing and mindless talk about trade federations and taxation routes. Compare this to the glorious one-liners, epic battles and planet destroying moments of the other films.

Ok, Episode III had its moments, usually when Ewan McGregor was around, but it’s good to see that The Force Awakens and Rogue One have restored the things that we absolutely love about Star Wars.

Nothing can ever replace the love that Star Wars fans have for Episodes IV-VI, but McGregor’s performance as Obi-Wan was one of the standout aspects of the most recent trilogy.

Watching him grow into the second most famous beard in film – Hans Gruber gets the top spot – was arguably the most enjoyable part of Lucas’ modern trilogy and we genuinely feel that there’s so much more that McGregor could do with the character, especially if the rumoured spin-off does take place between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.

While no new titles were announced at Star Wars Celebration, it’s clear that the Scottish actor is more than happy to reprise the role.

Speakign with EW, he said. “There’s no official offer, and I haven’t met them about it or anything”, he said. “But I’ve always said that I’d be happy to do it if they wanted to do it. It would be a good segue between the last episode of the prequels and the new episodes. I think they’ve got films to make until the 2020s, so I don’t think it’s going to happen soon if it happens at all.”

So, Star Wars fans, what do you think? Would you be happy for an Obi-Wan standalone adventure to be the next film from the galaxy that’s far, far away?

Truth be told, we want a Boba Fett movie where he teams up with Darth Vader to disintegrate their enemies. How cool would that be?
