Or is it a reboot? Who knows.

Things are moving forward on the follow-up to 2015’s really quite terrible Suicide Squad.

James Gunn is set to write and direct the movie, which is going by The Suicide Squad rather than Suicide Squad 2 or 2 Suicide 2 Squad, as it really ought to be called.

Gunn was recently brought back into the Guardians of the Galaxy fold following a high profile fallout, but will work on the DCEU project first.

He already has Margot Robbie confirmed to reprise the role of Harley Quinn, with Jai Courtney also returning as Captain Boomerang, while Idris Elba was originally announced to be replacing Will Smith as Deadshot, but it appears he’s playing someone else entirely.

And now it appears that they’ll have heavyweight competition in the form of hulking but friendly WWE man-beast John Cena.

Variety reports that Cena is in currently in talks to bring hustle, loyalty and respect to the film, though it is unclear just what role he’s earmarked for.

Justin Kroll, who landed the scoop for Variety, did note on Twitter, however, that Big Match John is lined up for a spot that initially had Dave Bautista’s name on it.

The Animal is out, and Kroll reckons that Cena is expected to play The Peacemaker, a pacifist so enamoured by the idea of peace that he becomes a superhero to enforce it via non-lethal means.

So, just the kind of wacky bullshit that Cena can sell in his sleep. We’re in.

The Suicide Squad goes into production later this year, with an August 2021 release date in place.
