The film is from the writer of Jurassic Park and the director of Die Hard.

The 13th Warrior, the very underrated historical action flick from director John McTiernan (Die Hard, Predator), is airing on TV tonight (Friday, 10 April).

Based on a novel by Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton, the film is set in the 10th century. The story follows Ahmed ibn Fahdlan (Oscar-nominee Antonio Banderas, Pain and Glory), a Muslim ambassador exiled from his homeland after falling in love with the king's wife.

He later joins a group of Vikings. While at first, he is treated indifferently by them, he gradually gains their respect.

"As they travel together, they learn of a legendary evil closing in and must unite to confront this formidable force," the plot synopsis adds.

Also featuring screen legend Omar Sharif (Doctor Zhivago), alongside Diane Venora (Heat) and Tony Curran (Calibre), The 13th Warrior was a box office bomb upon release.

It also earned mixed reviews from critics, many of whom criticised the movie for having a "thin plot".

We'd argue, however, that the film's lead turn by Banderas, its unique period setting, its lavish sets, and its hard-hitting action sequences make it worth seeking out.

The 13th Warrior is airing on TV tonight on the channel Legend Xtra at 9pm. It's also streaming on Disney+.
