One of the best thrillers of recent years is among the movies on TV tonight

Movies On TV

Monday Movie Mix.

It’s a new week but we’re willing to bet there’s a bunch of familiar movies on the box.

Hopefully there’s the odd new gem or two in the mix.

In any event, here’s how it looks on Monday, 10 October…

A View to a Kill – ITV4 – 6.20pm

Roger Moore versus Christopher Walken in a thrilling Bond adventure.

Skyscraper – Film4 – 7.05pm

The Rock does his best Die Hard impression as he attempts to save his family from generic villains and a – you guessed it – doomed skyscraper.

Payback – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

Mel Gibson is out for revenge in this violent, pulpy ’90s thriller.

Shut In – Legend – 9pm

Not to be confused with the horror film of the same name from 2022, this is a 2016 effort with Naomi Watts in which a reclusive woman becomes convinced her house is haunted while a fierce storm rages outside. 5% on Rotten Tomatoes!

I, Robot – Film4 – 9pm

Will Smith, he of awkward onstage altercations fame, was front and centre in this enjoyable sci-fi vehicle back in 2004.

Smith plays Del Spooner (seriously, that’s his name), a detective in a future where robots are everywhere and generally making people’s lives better. Spooner, however, despises them.

When a robot is accused of murder – an event that should be impossible given their programming – Spooner must try and put prejudice aside to solve the crime. Keep an eye out for some shameless product placement!

Doubt – TG4 – 9.30pm

A disciplinarian nun at a Catholic school suspects a charismatic priest of behaving inappropriately with a student. Meryl Streep, Amy Adams and the late, brilliant Philip Seymour Hoffman lead the cast.

Jaws 3D – ITV4 – 10pm

ITV4 presumably not handing out the 3D glasses for this one.

Hell Is for Heroes – Turner Classic Movies – 11.10pm

Steve McQueen, James Coburn and Bobby Darin star in a World War II tale with a title so good it inspired a UK rock band to take on the mantle.

Parasite – Film4 – 11.15pm

Stay up late for our main choice this evening.

Parasite, which would go on to win both the Best International Picture and outright Best Picture at the Academy Awards, is that rarest of things – an instant classic.

It really is best to go in as blind as possible here so we’ll keep the plot details brief – a working class family devise a way for all of them to work for a rich family, and then things get… strange.

Blessed with exceptional acting, tight direction and a script that nails the balance between clever comedy, shocking drama and tension-fuelled thrills, Parasite is a genuine masterpiece.
