Our TV movie pick for tonight (Saturday, 11 October) is The Black Phone, the incredibly tense 2021 horror thriller from co-writer and director Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange, The Gorge, Sinister).
Based on a short story by Joe Hill (Horns), the film follows a young teenager named Finney (Mason Thames, How to Train Your Dragon) living in the suburbs of North Denver, Colorado, in the '70s.
While walking home from school, the teen is abducted by a serial killer known as The Grabber (Oscar-nominee Ethan Hawke, Training Day) and subsequently held prisoner.
Somehow, Finney finds himself able to communicate with the ghosts of The Grabber's past victims via a mysterious disconnected black phone hanging on the basement wall where he is trapped.
With the help of these spirits, the young teen plots an escape.
Thanks to Derrickson's moody and stylish direction, Hawke's terrifying villain and two incredible child performances by Thames and Madeline McGraw, who plays Finney's sister, The Black Phone was a huge hit at the box office and with critics.
This is to such an extent that a sequel, Black Phone 2, will be released in cinemas next Friday on 17 October, with Hawke, McGraw, and Thames all reprising their roles.
The follow-up is already earning rave reviews. You can check out JOE's interview with Derrickson about Black Phone 2 here, which we conducted around the time of the release of its first trailer.
As for the original, it is airing on TV tonight on the channel Film4 at 10.50pm. The Black Phone will also be available to stream on Channel 4's website from Sunday, 12 October.
