Our TV movie pick for tonight (Thursday, 10 October) is The Novice, the acclaimed 2021 psychological sports thriller.
The film follows Alex (played by Isabelle Fuhrman, Orphan), a college freshman who joins her university's rowing team and becomes obsessed with being the squad's best rower, no matter the cost.
"Intent on outperforming her teammates, Alex pushes herself to her limits-and beyond, alienating everyone around her in the name of success," the plot synopsis reads.
Released in 2021, this debut feature from writer-director Lauren Hadaway earned rave reviews from critics, earning a 93% Rotten Tomatoes score.
In particular, Hadaway's immersive direction, Fuhrman's intense performance and the movie's depiction of obsession were singled out for praise.
Having been nominated for five Independent Spirit Awards, The Novice is airing on TV tonight on Film4 at 11.45pm.
It is also available to rent on Apple TV for the low price of €1.99.

A United Kingdom - BBC Two - 11.30pm
David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike star in this biographical romantic drama.
