The Revenge Club, a very fun new British thriller series, is available to watch in its entirety right now.
Streaming via Paramount+, the show centres around Emily Hunter (Aimée-Ffion Edwards - Peaky Blinders, Slow Horses), a woman going through a messy divorce after discovering her husband having an affair with her best friend.
Joining a divorce support group, she meets five other lonely strangers (including Line of Duty's Martin Compston and Bafta-winning comedian Meera Syal), all struggling to deal with betrayal and heartbreak.
"With little in common beyond their emotional baggage, [the six attendees] form an unlikely bond and come up with a wildly misguided idea: to take revenge on the people who broke their hearts," the plot synopsis adds.
"What starts as a cathartic outlet quickly spirals into something far more chaotic, as their retribution escalates from petty pranks - forged exam papers, tarot cons, and rat invasions - to deadly accidents.
"As the group’s plans grow bolder, the line between justice and chaos begins to blur - and someone might just take things too far..."
Also starring Amit Shah (Happy Valley), Chaneil Kular (Sex Education), Douglas Henshall (Shetland) and Sharon Rooney (Barbie), The Revenge Club is based on the novel The Othello Club by J.D. Pennington.
The book has been adapted for the screen by writer Gabbie Asher (The Girlfriend), alongside Adam Usden (Lupin) and Matt Jones (The Split).
JOE has checked out the first episode of The Revenge Club, and we're excited to watch more.
The thriller's excellent cast (it's great to see Edwards get a lead showcase, after scene-stealing in supporting turns for so long) and darkly comedic premise make it an easy watch, even when what transpires story-wise slightly strains credulity.
Having filmed in Ireland as well, the series currently holds a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, suggesting it will make for a great binge-watch for audiences over the Christmas break.
You can read a sample of some of the show's other positive reviews below:
The Herald (Scotland): "By the halfway mark, the plot is treading water, but the strong characterisation starts to pay off. We may think we know where the story is heading, or not, but we’re enjoying the company either way."
Metro.co.uk: "It’s funny, it’s dark, and there’s a central mystery that I found quite compelling."
The Times (UK): "This grabs you from the off as an almost infuriatingly watchable bit of black-hearted fun."
The Upcoming: "Despite having somewhat of an identity crisis, there’s enough charm and boisterous energy laced throughout to keep viewers watching to see what happens next."
