'While often imitated by lesser films, rarely has a twist been so well teed up while remaining completely unpredictable to first-time viewers.'

The film sees Bruce Willis (Die Hard, Lucky Number Slevin) play Malcolm, a psychologist still coming to terms with an unexpected tragedy.

Amidst this, he begins working with Cole (Haley Joel Osment - Forest Gump, A.I. Artificial Intelligence), a troubled young boy whose strange behaviour is worrying his mother, Lynn (Toni Collette - Hereditary, Nightmare Alley).

As Cole and Malcolm form a close bond, the child tells the psychiatrist that he can see and talk to "dead people".

Released in 1999, The Sixth Sense was a massive hit at the box office and with critics, and went on to be nominated for six Oscars.

It's easy to see why. Aided by four fantastic performances by Willis, Osment, Collette and Olivia Williams (as Malcolm's wife), Shyamalan's ghost story / psychological thriller blends hair-raising scares and genuine heart.

The movie also culminates in what's probably the best twist ending ever.

While often imitated by lesser films, rarely has a twist been so well teed up while remaining completely unpredictable to first-time viewers, recontextualising everything that came before.

The Sixth Sense is airing on TV tonight on TG4 at 9.45pm. It's also streaming on Disney+.
