Season one drew a 68% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and a far warmer 88% from audiences, no small achievement for an adaptation of a story with such a passionate and involved fanbase.

The decision to veer away from that promising formula meant the show was already shedding fans by the end of season two, reportedly including Henry Cavill, who announced he was leaving before season three premiered.

It is a Netflix original, so all four seasons are streaming on Netflix in Ireland, with the final run still to come.

“The Witcher’s strong start has given way, with the unpopular fourth season setting a tone for the show that might yet be fixable in its final season,” wrote Faith Roswell for Screen Rant.

Whether season five can win back the audience marking the show down so heavily is now the only question that matters, and on the evidence of season four, a hard reset does not appear to be coming.
