Phil Lynott documentary

The Thin Lizzy legend is coming to the big screen. Amazing!

With the recent documentary Phil Lynott: Scéalta Ón Old Town currently available to watch on the RTÉ Player, it’s clear that the Irish public are still absolutely in love with the iconic singer and why wouldn’t we be?

Charismatic, talented, and most importantly, a fiercely proud Irishman, the Thin Lizzy frontman was symbolic of an era that saw massive social changes in Irish society.

“If lyrical and musical ability has to be matched with showmanship, attitude, style, if that’s your version of rock ’n’ roll, there’s no way past Phil Lynott. He’s at the top of the tree,” said Bono.

Simply put, he was cool when, really, it was just not considered cool to be Irish. Christ, during the recording of Live And Dangerous, he had the balls, charisma and cheek to ask the entire crowd: “Is there anybody here with any Irish in them? Is there any of the girls who’d like a little more Irish in them?'”

Away from music, Lynott was extremely passionate about poetry, Irish history and folklore.  In his own words: “When I’m in England, I’m from Ireland. When I’m in Ireland, I’m from Dublin. When I’m in Dublin, I’m from Crumlin.”

Well, if you’re a fan of the iconic singer, you’ll be pleased to know Marcie Films are making a documentary about his life and they’re currently in pre-production on it.

The film is fully authorised by the Lynott Estate and it’s going to be a co-production with Universal Music with funding from Screen Ireland.

The documentary will be directed by Emer Reynolds and you may already know the name of the talented director. Reynolds’ last film, The Farthest, has met with critical acclaim  and we’ve championed the Emmy-award winning documentary at length before.

FYI, it currently has an 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has been widely hailed as one of the greatest Irish films of all time.

The new documentary about Lynott’s life will be a celebration of his work and it’s solely focused on his music and lyrics.

In terms of the people that are interviewed, the filmmakers will be chatting with Lynott’s family, friends and key collaborators to help tell his story but that’s not all.

The filmmakers are also on the hunt for rare and insightful archive material to help tell Lynott’s story. On this note, they’re looking for professional and amateur footage/photos of Phil Lynott or Thin Lizzy in action.

If you’ve got anything that fits the description, feel free to get in touch with the filmmakers at [email protected].

Who knows, maybe some camera that’s gathering dust in your attic could form a key scene in a documentary about one of Ireland’s greatest ever musicians?
