There’s lots of love for Limerick’s Ruth Negga as she lands an Oscar nomination

Paul Moore

G’wan Ruth!

While the 2017 Academy Awards won’t have as much Irish interest as last year’s ceremony, there’s still plenty to cheer about from an Irish perspective.

Dubliner Consolata Boyle has been nominated for her costume design work on Florence Foster Jenkins and the career of Limerick’s Ruth Negga looks set to go into the stratosphere after she was nominated in the Best Actress category for her performance in Loving.

There’s also a strong Irish interest in The Lobster as it landed a nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

Set to be released in Irish cinemas on Feb 3rd, Loving tells the story of Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple, whose challenge of their anti-miscegenation arrest for their marriage in Virginia led to a legal battle that would end at the US Supreme Court.

The Oscar nomination is the latest accolade that the Ethiopian-Irish actress has received, she was nominated for a Golden Globe, BAFTA Rising Star and Independent Spirit Award, while winning the Rising Star Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, among many others.

After the news was announced, plenty of people were absolutely delighted for the star of Love/Hate, Preacher and Breakfast on Pluto.

Best of luck to her and all the Irish nominees.
