One of the best modern gangster shows is coming to streaming

Nominated for Best Drama Series at this year's Baftas, the show has been compared to The Sopranos.

This City Is Ours, the acclaimed British gangster series, will finally be available to stream in Ireland this week.

Coming to the RTÈ Player after airing on the BBC in the UK, the Liverpool-set show follows Michael (James Nelson-Joyce, The Covenant), a young man who, for all his adult life, has been involved in organised crime.

However, when he falls for Diana (Hannah Onslow, Empire of Light), he begins to reevaluate his life, contemplating a future beyond his criminal activities.

This love affair plays out against the disintegration of Michael’s crime gang. For years, with his friend and soon-to-be-retired boss Ronnie (Sean Bean, Anemone), Michael has been successfully shipping cocaine from Colombia into Liverpool and beyond. But when a delivery goes missing, the pair know their organisation is under attack.

Ronnie's son Jamie (Jack McMullen, Hijack), meanwhile, decides he wants to inherit the crime business, and believes there's no longer a place at the table for Michael.

Created by Stephen Butchard (The Last Kingdom, Shardlake), This City Is Ours also stars Irish actress Saoirse-Monica Jackson (Derry Girls).

The show's first season comprises eight episodes and has earned rave reviews, holding an impressive 93% Rotten Tomatoes score. Critics have singled out Bean and Nelson-Joyce's lead performances, the dialogue, and the Liverpool setting for particular praise.

This City Is Ours was also nominated for two Baftas. These were in the Best Drama Series and Best Lead Actor categories, with Nelson-Joyce picking up a nod in the latter.
