Top Gun Maverick cast react to those incredible reviews

Rory Cashin

“It’s better than somebody saying ‘It’s a piece of shit’.”

We reported a few weeks back that Top Gun Maverick was rocking some of the most positive reviews of Tom Cruise’s entire, impressive filmography.

As you’ll see from our review, we entirely agree, with one of the action sequences ranking among the very best of the last decade or so.

Leading to the release of the movie, JOE had the opportunity to chat to some of the cast of the blockbuster sequel, including Jon Hamm. Check out our full interview with him right here:

During our chat, we asked Hamm how he reacted to those overwhelmingly positive reviews?

Hamm told us:

“It is almost unheard of. I think there are a couple of things that at work right now, and I think that part of it is that the movie-going audience has not had a reason to go back to the cinema for a minute. And I think it feels like we’ve had a two-year hiatus of being on our couches, and this is the one to go back to the cinema for.

“It needs to be loud, blowing you back in your seat, and it delivers. The best thing about this film is that it absolutely delivers. From the first 30 seconds of the movie, when the music kicks in, you are ready to go on this ride, and it’s exciting.”

“It’s better than somebody saying ‘It’s a piece of shit’, I’ll tell you that much. I’ll take it! I’m very, very proud of what we made. It took a while to get to the screen, the world had other plans for the last two years. But I’m very, very excited for people to see it and judge for themselves.”

JOE also chatted to Miles Teller, and you can watch that interview in full right here:

During that chat, JOE mentioned that Top Gun Maverick was currently sitting pretty with a score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Teller enthusiastically responded:

“That’s a fresh tomato! The only way we accomplished that is by making something that exceeding expectations that were so incredibly high. I think when people first found out or heard that we were making a sequel to this, automatically people were like ‘Awh, well that’s gonna suck! You’re making something 30 years later and it’s about drones now?’ and all this stuff.

“And Tom said, for this movie to work, we’re trying to hit a bullet with a bullet. That was the analogy that he used. And if you’re gonna bet on one person, I would bet on Tom. He’s been doing this for a long time, and he is the man!”

Below, you can check out JOE’s conversations with more of the cast of the movie, where they all discuss what it likes working on the set of a Tom Cruise movie.

Top Gun Maverick is in Irish cinemas right now.
