Top Gun: Maverick won’t be bringing back one of its original characters

It’s not Goose (still too painful)

Its time to put the pedal to the metal and hit that highway to the danger zone because Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel to Tony Scott’s cult-classic, is revvin’ up its engine as Tom Cruise’s beloved character gets set to turn and burn once more.

Of course, Maverick is a rogue that lives life on the edge – after all, his ego is writing cheques that his body can’t cash – but ‘Mav’ always had a solid team behind him to keep his ‘over the edge’ instincts in check.

Goose was the voice of reason – god bless his soul – while Charlie took none of his shit, you know, until he took her breath away.

This being said, one man that had no time for Maverick’s flashy flying was Lieutenant Commander Rick “Jester” Heatherly and in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Michael Ironside (Starship Troopers, Total Recall) confirmed that his cantankerous character won’t be back for the sequel because his relationship with the film’s producer, Jerry Bruckheimer, isn’t on good terms.

“I’m not going to be in this film. The one person still in charge is Jerry Bruckheimer and Mr Bruckheimer and I don’t really get along, or didn’t get along. He offered me a project 10 or 12 years ago and… I said no to it,” he said.

He adds: “The next time I saw him at a hockey game… I went up and said, ‘Hey Jerry’ and he just turned around and I figured, ‘Well that relationship is over with’. But he has a business he has to run, he has to make decisions based on his way of doing things and what makes him feel safe.”

Truth be told, we’re a little sad to hear this news because Ironside delivered one of the great Top Gun lines when he said: “That was some of the best flying I’ve seen to date – right up to the part where you got killed.”

Well, thanks for the memories Jester.

Top Gun: Maverick is set for release in cinemas on June 26, 2020.
