#TRAILERCHEST: Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie shine in the trailer for Mary, Queen of Scots

Mary Queen of Scots Saoirse Ronan

An Oscar in the bag for both actresses, we reckon.

With thanks to secret on-location shots, drastic makeovers and Hollywood’s love affair with young prodigy Saoirse Ronan – the long-awaited Mary, Queen of Scots has gained quite a substantial amount of hype over the past few months.

This gives us the immense pleasure to show off the highly-anticipated trailer, featuring two female protagonists – passing the often-disregarded Bechdel Test with flying colours.

Plot’s it all about?: The film is based on the 2004 book My Heart is My Own: The Life of Mary Queen of Scots by Professor John Guy.

According to reports, the movie will begin with the return of Mary Queen of Scots from France at the age of 18, following the death of her first husband Francis II of France.

Robbie plays Queen Elizabeth of England, Mary’s cousin through their grandfather Henry VII of England. The film follows their tumultuous relationship while exploring the life of Queen Mary Stuart.

Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary defies pressure to remarry following the death of Francis II.

Instead, she returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. However, Scotland and England at the time are under the rule of Elizabeth I. This sees the two queens become bitter rivals, attempting to prove important in a masculine world.

Both now must decide how to play the game of marriage versus independence. Betrayal, rebellion, and conspiracies within each court imperil both thrones and change the course of history.

Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie, David Tennant, Gemma Chan, Jack Lowden, Joe Alwyn.

Director: Josie Rourke

Release date: 7 December, 2018
