Underwater looks like it could be the most claustrophobic film ever made

This is going to trigger a bad reaction in a lot of viewers.

This new horror movie really conjures up a series of proper nightmare scenarios, and that is without mentioning that it involves being stuck in a small space with T.J. Miller for a prolonged amount of time.

Underwater involves a group of scientists working in a laboratory at the very bottom of the ocean, and they all must scramble to survive when an earthquake completely destroys the facility, leaving them with limited means to get back to the surface, and an even more limited amount of oxygen.

Plus, the earthquake may have set something loose that was living just below the bottom of the ocean, and is now moving freely in the deep darkness around them.

It does seem to be a little bit like Alien-at-the-bottom-of-the-ocean (which is no bad thing), and that vibe comes in no small part thanks to Kristen Stewart taking the lead in the escape mission, fully channeling Sigourney Weaver’s survivalist nature.

We’ve all seen claustrophobic movies before – Buried, The Descent, As Above So Below – but the combination of caving in walls, thousands of feet of water and water pressure, those restrictive diving suits, the dark, and whatever is waiting for them in the dark… (pulls at collar)… anyone else having a tough time breathing all of a sudden?

Starring: Kristen Stewart, Vincent Cassel, John Gallagher Jr., and (ugh) T.J. Miller.

Directed by: William Eubank (The Signal)

Irish release date: 10 January 2020

Enjoy!
