It was only for a split second and he clearly didn’t think he was on camera, but such are the perils of live broadcasting.

Clive Myrie was reporting on Facebook making a U-turn on their decision to allow videos featuring beheading on BBC News last night when he read out the word ‘patients’ instead of ‘parents’ and instantly made a ‘cutting’ gesture which wasn’t particularly appropriate under the circumstances.

As mistakes by news anchors go, it was hardly the worst mistake we’ve ever seen but given the sensitivity of the topic in question, it created something of an uncomfortable situation and was the subject of a bit of debate on Twitter last night.
